Bird of Prey Facilities

Our facilities for birds of prey include hospital rooms for intenstive care and spacious aviaries to allow a good recovery.
We also have a 35 metre long flight aviary to allow birds to exercise before release and with the use of CCTV monitoring we can carryout a very detailed assessment before release.

Large mammal facilities

For large mammals we have 18 intensive care rooms, some of which have skylights or outside runs. This enables to set up the environment for injured foxes and badgers to suit their particular needs. We also have "looseboxes" which are stable-like sheds suitable for deer. For seals we have a range of different sized pools.

Seabird Facilities

For the rehabilitation of seabirds our facilities include specialised washing and drying facilities for oiled birds. We also have a range of pools of different sizes and depths to accommodate the different species we admit each year.

Small mammal facilities

Small mammals are kept within the hospital building for most of the rehab process. Here we have a range of different rooms set-up with hedghehog boxes and mammal pens.

Larger rooms and outside runs are used for some species that need space or to allow casualties to acclimatise to the outdoor environment. Bats are held in small tanks but flown on a daily basis and we are planning to construct a bat flight soon.

Facilities for small birds

Care for many garden birds starts in the fledgling room, possibly in an incubator if they are very young on admission. Specially made artificial swallow nests provide swallows, swifts and martins a more natural environment.
West Hatch has 15 aviaries used for small birds, some of which are designed to provide space, protection and enrichment, others are designed to be used as a soft release base.
